Steve Halstead Oct. 8, 1954 - Dec. 1, 2012

Steve Halstead, 58, died Saturday, December 1, 2012. He was born October 8, 1954 in Sioux Falls, SD to Richard Keith Halstead and the late Jane Halstead. Steve lived in Bloomington, MN but moved to Greensboro at age 12 and graduated from Grimsley High School in 1972. Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Lyn Warlick Halstead of the home, two sons, Sean Halstead of Winston-Salem, Justin Halstead of Charlotte, daughter Lauren Halstead of Charlotte, father Keith Halstead, brothers Rick Halstead and wife Teri, and Scott Halstead and wife Sandy, and sister Sharon Calvert and husband Jim, all of Greensboro; sister-in law Bonnie Warlick of Raleigh and a host of nieces and nephews he loved dearly. He was also survived by Gerald Chrisco, his dear friend and tennis partner of 30 yrs. Steve was a 1976 graduate of UNC-CH and graduate of Wake Forest School of Law in May, 1979. Steve was employed at Integon/GMAC Insurance for 31 years and retired in May, 2011 as general counsel at GMAC Insurance, but most recently was employed as Operations Manager for the NC Soccer Referee Association. Steve’s favorite passions aside from his family were tennis and soccer. Steve was an avid tennis player and enjoyed playing several times each week. Steve served several terms on the board of Westwood Club and was a past president. He began playing soccer as an adult and fell in love with the "beautiful game" and volunteered as a coach with his children’s soccer teams for many years. Steve also served as a past vice president and then president of the board of directors for Twin City Youth Soccer Association. Following his term as president locally, Steve then served as Executive Vice-President for the NC Youth Soccer’s Board of Directors for several years. Steve will be remembered for his love and devotion to his family, his compassion and integrity, and his wicked sense of humor. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 8 in the Memorial Chapel at Salem Funeral Home, 120 S. Main St, Winston-Salem, NC. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. on Friday, December 7 in the Memorial Chapel at Salem Funeral Home. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Financial Assistance Fund for Twin City Youth Soccer Association, PO Box 362, Clemmons, NC 27012, or to the NC Tennis Foundation, 2709 Henry Street, Greensboro, NC 27405. The family wishes to thank Dr. Richard Brodkin and the staff at Piedmont Hematology and Oncology for their extraordinary kindness and compassion over the past four months. They wish to also thank Laurie Ann and Adam in CCICU and Jennifer in ICU for the same compassion and kindness during the past week.

The Halstead Fund was recently created at the Winston Salem Foundation for the Halstead Overlook project, which will be donated to Twin City Soccer.
