
The 89 Lady Twins Silver Challenge Soccer team won the
2007-08 Challenge State Cup at Bryan Park on 11/11/07.
They defeated the CASL Explosion 5-0 in the finals on
Bryan Park #2. Silver went through the entire State Cup
Tournament with a perfect record outscoring their
opponents 16-2.
The Twins started the scoring 00:45 when Morgan Smith
broke free for the first goal of the game. Annie
Ornelles added a goal later in the half with a beautiful
header off of a corner kick to make the score 2-0. Later
in the half Smith broke away for a third goal to make
the score 3-0 at halftime. CASL added an own goal off of
a corner for the Twins about midway through the second
half making the score 4-0. The final goal came when
Hannah Giles tapped in a crossed ball to seal the
victory.
The victory gives the 89 Twins Silver their third State
Challenge Cup championship in the last four years. In
the 06-07 Championship they defeated the CASL Heat
1-0. The Twins also won the Cup in 04-05 when they
defeated the CASL Avengers 1-0. In 05-06 the Silver
were runner up to the same Explosion team losing on a
late goal 1-0. Sundays victory avenges the 05-06 loss
in the finals.
The Silver is composed of students from 6 area High
Schools including: Calvary Day School, High Point
Wesleyan, Mt Tabor, NC School of the Arts, RJ Reynolds,
and West Forsyth. Players for the Silver include: Mahlon
Annas, Hannah Barefoot, Caitlin Brown, Hannah Carmen,
Kinsley Craft, Minnie Elliot, Hannah Giles, AK Hartgrove,
Sara Henderson, Amy Klinepeter, Laura Messenger, Aly
Murawski, Annie Ornelles, Hayley Pierce, Kelly Schurtz,
Morgan Smith, Ashley Southard, Cori Ward, Kate Wasowski,
and Emily Welker. The Head Coach is Mike Southard and
the Assistant Coach is Jim Annas.
